Performance Recognition & Awards
Introduction
It is the purpose of this document to establish guidelines for recognizing exemplary service by Township employees, volunteers, and residents, and to provide protocols for the presentation and display of awards and related recognition for such service.
Policy
The recognition of personal excellence is an important aspect of York Township. Presenting awards for meritorious service provides that recognition which enhances employee, volunteer and resident morale, reinforces commitment of employees and volunteers to maintain a high standard of performance, and motivates employees and volunteers to perform at the highest possible level.
Awards
Length of Service Award - This award shall recognize each employee on the time of service provided to the Township and will be determined by the actual number of accrued employment years. Awards will be presented for years accumulated in the following increments: 5 years, 10 years, 15 years, 20 years, etc. This award consists of a pin recognizing the years of service.
Employee Recognition Award - Awarded to any employee where performance clearly surpasses the normal requirements of the employee’s position and exhibits a high degree of competency. Examples of acts for which this award may be given include: surpassing the general description of performance for the employee’s position, a specific act which has a major influence on others and is associated with a strong commitment to the overall mission of the Township, or other actions worthy of recognition and commendation. This award will consist of a certificate, a letter of recognition for the employee’s personnel file, and a pin.
York Township Board of Commissioners Commendation Award - Awarded to any employee, volunteer, or citizen for contributions to a more effective and efficient Township and is associated with a strong commitment to the residents of York Township and the betterment of our community. Examples of acts for which this award may be given include: service on Township boards and committees, volunteering time to the betterment of our community, and outstanding service by an employee in the performance of their job. This award will consist of a framed certificate from the Board of Commissioners, recognition in the Township newsletter and local newspapers and, in the case of an employee, a letter of recognition for their personnel file.
York Township Board of Commissioners Meritorious Service Award - This award shall recognize any employee, volunteer or citizen for outstanding dedication and service to the residents of York Township. The award is the highest honor that is bestowed by the Township. Examples of acts for which this award may be given include: saving a life or attempting to save a life using first aid, CPR, AED or other action, and service on township boards or committees for numerous terms. The award will consist of a resolution passed by the Board of Commissioners, a framed copy of which will be given to the recipient, the recipient’s name will be placed on a plaque permanently displayed in the township building, and recognition in the township newsletter and local newspapers, and in the case of an employee, a letter of recognition for their personnel file.
Awards Program
Recommendation Procedures - Any resident may recommend another resident, volunteer, or employee of York Township. Supervisors are specifically responsible for recommending employees of their staff whenever appropriate because of their direct and continuous relationship with them in their field. All recommendations for awards will be submitted to the Township Manager through the chain of command.
Notification of Awards for Township Employees - Personnel for whom an Employee Recognition Award has been approved shall be notified by the Township Manager. All awards to Township employees with the exception of Length of Service Awards shall be made a matter of record in the employee’s personnel file and shall be included in consideration of personnel decisions such as promotion or special assignments. Letters or emails of appreciation or commendation by a citizen shall be forwarded to the employee with a copy to the supervisor and a copy placed in the personnel file.
Notification of Awards for Citizens - Volunteers or citizens who have received Board of Commissioners awards shall be notified by the Township Manager. Letters or emails of appreciation or commendation by a citizen shall be forwarded to the citizen.
Presentation of Awards - Length of Service and Employee Recognition Awards will be presented at the next scheduled employee meeting. Board of Commissioners Commendation and Meritorious Service Awards will be presented at a formal ceremony during a monthly BOC meeting. Members of the recipient’s family and department personnel shall be notified and encouraged to attend when appropriate.
